Jewellery Excellence MasterClass: 2024 Graduation

In May 2023, MetCon, in partnership with the Gauteng IDZ, introduced the Jewellery Excellence MasterClass (JEM). The vision was to equip up-and-coming jewellers with the technical and business skills needed to take their creativity and businesses to the next level.

Based in the Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct in the OR Tambo Special Economic Zone, 4 participating jewellers spent the last year bringing their jewellery designs to life in a state-of-the-art workshop, attending multi-disciplinary MasterClasses on their journey. MetCon further supported the initiative by outsourcing some of its manufacturing to these jewellers, aiding the growth of their businesses.

JEM combines theory with real practical experience in an environment surrounded by supportive entities. This is the spirit of the Special Economic Zone. The goal is to share and grow across buildings, across businesses, across cultures, all whilst offering resources and support to benefit the greater industry.

On the evening of Thursday the 9th of May 2024, key industry stakeholders gathered at MetCon to celebrate the first graduates of the programme: Ayanda Zondi, Isabel Bothma, Kamogelo Phago and Samuel Motitsoe.

We asked each of the graduates to share their experience:

Ayanda: “My experience with JEM was a very useful experience, because it helped me take my skill to a professional level and know what is expected for international jewellery quality. It also taught me how to run my business.”

Isabel: “Having the opportunity to be part of JEM was an amazing experience. This MasterClass helped me enhance the quality of my products and taught me how to ensure quality goods are sent to stores. Also, the accredited business skills program that forms part of the programme was great for my business knowledge. There were so many things that I missed when I was starting my business. I learnt so much through these classes and the teachers assisting us.

Also, the exposure to gemstone setting, jewellery manufacturing processes, and advanced finishing skills are some of the top things I witnessed here, and I believe it has elevated my skills in my career. The course was very enjoyable, I highly recommend it.”

Kamogelo: “JEM played a significant role in my life, both personally and professionally, learning about various metals such as platinum and pure gold, opening up doors of skills improvement and immense potential. I had the opportunity to refine my skills under the guidance of experienced mentors and learn advanced techniques in jewellery design and craftsmanship.

I gained a deeper understanding of gemology, metalworking, and design principles. The programme also provided business classes through the Khulisane Academy, providing insights into business management and business development. The programme also allowed me to connect with fellow artisans and industry professionals. Overall, the programme has significantly enhanced my expertise and creativity as a jeweller, empowering me to create more refined and captivating pieces for my business and clientele.”

Samuel: “The JEM program has brought so much growth in all aspects of my life, mainly because of the positivity it has brought, a new skillset, and it being held in a holistic environment by a very patient and professional mentor.”

Congratulations to the class of 2024!
